Emilia Pérez made history last month when it became the most-nominated non-English-language film ever at the Oscars with 13 nominations. For context, that’s how many nominations Oscars Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer earned, and it ultimately won Best Picture.

Written and directed by Jacques Audiard, the French-made, Spanish-language musical crime drama follows a cartel leader (Karla Sofía Gascón) who undergoes a transition to become a woman, a process which inspires her to attempt to atone for her crimes. Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez co-star.

Since its premiere at Cannes last year, Emilia Pérez has garnered a generally positive response from critics, although it’s also met its fair share of criticism. Besides an increasing number of reviewers criticizing the movie on a general filmmaking basis, Mexicans and trans people have blasted the film for perpetuating stereotypes. On top of that, star and Best Actress nominee Karla Sofía Gascón has come under fire for inflammatory tweets from a few years ago about Muslims, George Floyd and diversity.

All of that is to say that Emilia Pérez is certainly one of the most talked about movies in recent memory, for better or worse. If you’re someone who has seen all of this (or is just learning about it now) and is curious to watch for yourself, you’re in luck. Emilia Pérez is streaming exclusively on Netflix in Canada, the United States and Europe.

The Oscars take place on Sunday, March 2nd at 4pm PT/7pm ET, hosted for the first time by Conan O’Brien. Canadians can watch the ceremony from CTV and CTV2 channels on TV, CTV.ca and the CTV app on Android, iOS and connected TV devices. On CTV’s digital platforms, you’ll need to sign in with your TV provider.
