The Roughriders previously acquired Maier from the Stampeders on Dec. 23 in exchange for an eighth-round pick in the 2025 CFL Draft. The 6-foot-0, 200-pounder is expected to serve as the backup to veteran Trevor Harris this year in Saskatchewan.
Maier has spent the last four seasons in Calgary since his CFL debut in 2001. In 65 career games, which include 45 starts, Maier has completed 1,022 passes for 11,685 yards with 60 touchdowns and 39 interceptions.
Last season, he started 15 games and threw for 3,841 yards and 22 touchdowns, which both ranked third in the CFL, however the Stampeders failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2004.
The California native joins a Roughriders team that features offensive coordinator Marc Mueller, who worked alongside Maier in Calgary from 2021-23.
Reid signs with Vikings
Trevor Reid, Saskatchewan’s starting left tackle from the 2024 season, has officially found a new home.
The NFL’s Minnesota Vikings announced the signing of Reid on Thursday to a future/reserve free agent contract. The Roughriders previously released Reid from his CFL contract on Tuesday although Saskatchewan will retain his CFL rights.
