Greggs and Iceland have recalled a hugely popular item over an ingredient that could cause a ‘possible health risk’.

The British bakery chain has recalled two-pack steak bake products sold exclusively by Iceland as a result of them containing sulphites, which are not declared on the label.

A statement by the Food Standards Agency revealed that ‘due to a packaging error’ some packs contain sausage, bean and cheese melts which contain sulphites.

These were incorrectly packed in the steak bake packaging, meaning sulphites are not declared on the label.

As a result, the product has been deemed a ‘possible health risk’ for anyone who has a ‘sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites’.

In a statement outlining their advice to customers, Greggs said: ‘If you have bought the above product and have a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites do not consume it.

‘Instead return it to your nearest Iceland store from where it was bought for a full refund.

Greggs has said that as well as recalling the product from customers, it is contacting the ‘relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall.’

The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers.

These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.
